Why should I volunteer or donate?

How do I measure the return on my investment in the program of the Boy Scouts of America?

For Every 100 Boys who join the Boy Scouts:

  • Only rarely will one be brought before Juvenile Court
  • Four will become Eagle Scouts
  • Twelve will have their first contact with a church
  • Eighteen will develop hobbies used during their adult life
  • Eight will enter a vocation that was learned through the Merit Badge program
  • Seventeen will be future Scouting volunteers
  • Two will use his Scouting skills to save his own life
  • One will use his Scouting skills to save another person's life

The "Values of Americans" study conducted by Harris Interactive revealed that compared to their non-Scout counterparts, men who were Scouts are more likely to:
  • Earn a college degree (35% vs. 17%)
  • Own their own homes (74% vs. 65%)
  • Have a higher average household income ($80,000 vs. $61,000)

83% of men who were Scouts agreed that the values they learned in Scouting continue to be very important to them today.

Likewise, a recent study by Baylor University found that compared to their non-Eagle Scout counterparts, men who had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout were more likely to:

  • Have higher levels of planning and preparation skills, be goal-oriented, and network with others
  • Be in a leadership position at their place of employment or local community
  • Report having closer relationships with family and friends
  • Volunteer for religious and nonreligious organizations
  • Donate money to charitable groups
  • Work with others to improve their neighborhoods
